Types of Papers to Submit

The Houston Journal of International Law (Journal) publishes high-quality articles and comments, recent development notes, essays, and book reviews from the legal community on timely international legal issues.

Format of Submissions

All submissions should be typewritten, double-spaced, twelve (12) point font (Courier or Times New Roman, preferred), with one (1) inch margins. Authors should use footnotes as opposed to endnotes. Footnotes should be in the same font and size as the body text. Furthermore, authors must cite in accordance with the latest edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, available from the Harvard Law Review Association.

All submission should be accompanied by a brief abstract of the manuscript as well as a statement of academic and professional affiliations.

How and Where to Submit

Submissions may be mailed or emailed to the Head Articles Editor. If submission is mailed, the Journal will not return the paper unless postage is supplied by the author.

Agreements by Authors

Except as otherwise expressly provided, the author of each article published in the Journal grants permission for copies of that article to be made for classroom use in a nationally accredited law school, provided that (1) copies are distributed at or below cost; (2) the author and journal are identified; and (3) proper notice of copyright is affixed to each copy. Except as otherwise expressly provided, copyright in each article is held jointly by the Journal and the individual contributor. Author(s) must execute a Publication and Copyright Agreement with the Journal prior to publication.

Student Submissions:

The James Baker Hughes Prize

International Economic Law

Each year, the Journal invites law students at all levels (J.D., L.L.M.) to compete for the James Baker Hughes Prize, awarded to the best unpublished student-written manuscript on the subject of international economic law. "International economic law" is a broad term that we consider to include all legal aspects of economic relations, from private business matters to international trade conflicts. This $500 cash award is funded by a grant from Judge and Mrs. Lynn N. Hughes, and the winning submission will be published as the "James Baker Hughes Prize" article in an upcoming issue of the Journal.

Format of Manuscript: All manuscripts must be (1) typewritten, (2) double-spaced, (3) printed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with 1 inch margins; (4) no longer than 25 pages in length exclusive of footnotes, and (5) typed in 12 point, Times New Roman font.

Deadline: March 7, 2008

Award: $500.00 and an offer for publication in an upcoming issue of the Journal

Submissions will not be accepted by e-mail.

Conditions of Submissions: Any manuscript submitted to the Journal in this competition shall become the property of the Journal. No manuscript so submitted may be published in any journal or periodical other than the Journal until after announcement of the winner of this competition. After such announcement, any non-winning manuscript submitted for consideration in this competition may be published in any other journal or periodical. The Journal will announce the winner by April 30, 2008.
